So if you have been curious on how you can utilize video games to earn some side income or turn it into your passion project or business, you have come to the right place. I will break down the difficulty levels of each way and give you guidance on what it takes to succeed in each field.
This is one of the easiest ways to get started. Creating a website is very simple nowadays with WordPress. It takes barely any technical knowledge and you can get started in less than 30 minutes if you know what you are doing.
It will depend on your interest. You want to list the things you enjoy doing. Video games will be one for sure. Here is an example of mine:
This is what I spend my time on. Write yours down and figure out what you enjoy doing. Also, if you look through your buying history on your credit/debit card, you will gain insight on what you truly like.
After that, ask yourself these honest questions:
These questions gets you to really hone in on what you truly care about. You will be surprised what you will find by answering these questions.
Since most of you are gaming fanatics, we can narrow down our niches to mostly gaming. The key is to pick a sub genre and stick to it. For example, here is a list of gaming niches you can put your focus on:
With that being said, the next step will be to:
Setting all of this up should take you no more than 30 minutes if you following the instructions!
Good question. There are many ways to do so. I will list all the ways that you can use to monetize your website:
Starting a YouTube channel is also an easy way to get started. YouTube has a special program called the YouTube Partner Program. Anyone that uploads videos to their platform and follow their content guidelines and policies will be able to earn money from their ad revenue system. They share ad revenue with you. I am not entirely sure about the percentage, but it is right around the 50-60% mark.
As for how much you can earn for views generate will depend on how much advertisers are willing to pay. One can expect $0.50 to $1.50 per 1000 views. I personally average 33 cents per 1000 views, which is way under the average.
If you are dedicated to uploading videos on a consistent basis and get a lot of subscribers, you will be able to generate a huge audience and earn $3000+/month. It will take time and possibly a years time of consistent uploading and content producing to reach that level, but it will be worth it! Freedom is right around the corner!
Now you are also going to utilize the method mentioned above for websites and blogs. Once you have narrowed down your niche, you can start creating videos around that topic. However, you will need some equipment to get started.
There are a few types of recording style:
In addition to owning cameras, you will also need other tools to improve your channel quality:
While you won’t need all of them, it can definitely speed up your content creation process.
This is probably one of the most popular dreams that a good portion of the gamers strive to achieve. That is, sitting home and playing video games while plenty of people watch you play your favorite game. Unfortunately, most do not see the hard work, persistence and perseverance required for this dream career that most fantasize about.
You will need to ask yourself the following questions:
If you choose to pursue this path, I want you to know the road isn’t easy. You need to be consistent in streaming and good content plus personality to pull it off.
To get started, you will need a broadcast software:
There are also other options here that is recommended by Twitch, but the 3 mentioned above are the ones that I see streamers using.
Here is a simple guide on how to stream on YouTube.
I am going to list a few examples that made it through sheer persistence and doing what they love. It took them a while to build up their audience, but they did it by publishing good content on a CONSISTENT basis.
Kripparrian (Now TSM Kripp)
He is one of the most dedicated gamers that didn’t give up on his gaming a career. He used to play WoW, Diablo 3 and now Hearthstone. He never stopped producing content for his viewers and his consistency is what paid off.
The video above is Kripparian’s back when he wasn’t that famous just yet. This also goes to show how far he has come in 6 years. Closing in on almost 1 million subscribers on YouTube and 184 million views on Twitch, he is the veteran of streaming.
Lirik’s rise to success wasn’t a one day thing. Like Kripparian, he started off with WoW and transitioned to Dayz. Since then his channel grew and he averages 20,000 – 40,000 viewers per stream (also sometimes depends on the game). As of October 2017 he has around 1.83 million followers.
Ask yourself this, how many of you are willing to drop your studies/work/main job now and instead try playing video games, while not being a pro, just for the fuck of it, and seeing if you can just…. do it for a living. Also, coming from an Asian, immigrant family and doing this.(if you are Asian you know what I mean)
I’m not some God figure. I’m a nerd, who is shy, who happened to just decide to stream and see what the fuck happens. Looking back, I don’t know what the fuck I was thinking. Maybe it was my addiction, or love, for gaming. I just always thought I had funny moments in video games so why not just broadcast it and see what happened? No fucking idea. I never even used a cam. Why do you think I hate reading games? Because, I can’t be myself listening to some Witcher 3 NPC talk for 5 hours without you guys seeing my facial expression. To me, I feel as though you watch for the entertainer not the game. I get self conscious I guess, I don’t fucking know.
Make no doubt that streaming is an extremely lucrative career once you get over 1000+ consistent viewers…

All of these games requires skill and tonnes of practice to become really good.
Some may say its talent…but its perseverance and hard work. Nobody wants to hear this though! 🙂
If you are serious about this, start practicing on the game you are focusing on. If you can actually dedicate 4-5 hours a day to practice the game mechanics, I would say you have a chance to become good.
If you are someone that loves to talk about video games, podcasts is a perfect way to get your voice out there without always having to show your face. It is a great alternative to YouTube.
Here is a list of steps to get started in Podcasting:
Below are some podcasts for various games:
The good thing about a video game tester is that it is an entry level job, so you won’t need a bachelors or masters to get in. As a game tester, your job is to help game companies test their games to find bugs or crashes. Remember, if you dream of endless days spent playing your favorite video games, you’ll be severely disappointed.
You have to take the job seriously and meet the expectations of the companies that hire you to do so. As a game tester, your objective is to break the games in any way possible and to report anything that breaks to people on our programming, design, or art teams.
Also, you will also want to have a resume (or CV) ready so that you can apply for one.
Below is a list of qualities that most companies will look for:
The fastest way is to search online using these portals to find companies that are looking to hire game testers:

Depending on your starting budget, I have a list of suggestions for you to choose from. Now, starting out with cheap equipment will net you with lower quality videos, but as long as you get started, you can always upgrade later.
2) Sidesync (Android to PC)
2) Mobizen (Android)
This one has a slight learning curve and below are videos to help you get started.
He goes over the technical details that you will need to know in order to record YouTube videos.
For streaming iOS, I use Airserver ($15 bucks now I think).
For those that want higher quality videos, you will have to invest.
For decent quality, I recommend using Screen-o-matic. It is only 15 bucks per year and you won’t need to download anything to record videos.
For decent quality and editing, I personally use WeVideo. It is also quite cheap at $69 bucks per year, you can make and edit unlimited videos.
You can start with your own gaming headset if you are tight on money. I was using this $23 headset to record my voice on Amazon. But for real quality voice recording, you are going to have to invest.
A Blue Yeti Microphone is a great starter mic and it will be more than enough to get a good sound quality going.
You can use the following online picture editor/maker to start:
You can also use Adobe Photoshop Illustrator if you already have it or is skilled at using it.
It is very important know what keywords you want to use for your video. This tool by far is the best that you can use to come up with video ideas and what Google and Youtube searchers are looking for.
If you are into specific games, just type in that game and you will find keywords that you may miss while making videos.
For most videos that will get residual traffic after your subs have watched the video, you want to go after the following titles (X is the game):
To start out, you can use bluestacks if you are trying to record the gameplay footage on your computer.
Marketing Strategies Used
Don’t worry much about video quality at first. You can upgrade as you get more subs and some income coming in.
Posting on Forums – Powerbang posts his videos on the SuperCell forums consistently while trying to grow his channel.
Posting on Reddit – Posting videos on sub-reddit (in this case, Clash of Clans Reddit) to garner some views and exposure.
Being Consistent with Publishing Videos – People will come back if you consistently make videos weekly. Be it 1/2/5/7 videos a week, as long as you publish, you will always see an upward trajectory. Powerbang started out doing 1 video weekly, but eventually he went up to 3-5 weekly and then eventually one video a day.
In short, daily content is the best way to grow your channel…
Youtube pays you per 1,000 views and that’s all based on ad revenue. So a bidding process takes place every single time someone watches your video. Advertisers have a split second or a microsecond to bid on that videos view, and you get a percentage of that advertisement fee. Per 1,000 views. So that sounds like a pretty high threshold.
Unfortunately, gamers don’t spend a lot of money on ads. It tends to be a younger audience, and that definitely affects how much you’ll be paid as a gamer on youtube. Because the most people watching your videos are 16 year old boys and those boys aren’t going to be buying many ads for the most part.
So because of that our CPM (clicks per minute) will be a little lower, per 1000 views. Some people may get paid up to 10 dollars per 1000 views. But for gaming though, expect 50 cents to 2 dollars per 1000 views.
Multi Channel Networks (MCN)
Please do not join any of the MCN as they are not worth it to further taking ad revenue away from you. Many have been screwed over by these networks, so be warned…
You are probably expecting a different method where I start teaching you how to utilize your video game skills. However, this is the most important step you will need before you even embark on the journey… and that is your mindset.
Before we get into having the right mindset, let me start with a familiar story…
You love video games. So do I. If you are here, most of you are in one of these situations:
I have been in all 4 situations and it is not fun. I grew up in a rather poor family in Malaysia. At the age of 17, I moved to the US as we tried to start afresh here. I picked up a job at Starbucks and worked there for 6 years while trying to figure out what I wanted to do.
Just like any other kid, the logical step was to go to college here. The problem is after 3-4 years in college, I became extremely disillusioned with the education system. Most universities will cost $20,000 or more. If you go to any prestigious university, then it will be a lot more. Most of us are not rich enough to have our parents pay 100% of our tuition. That means we have to work a part time job to pay for school or get financial aid.
Either way, you are fucked…
80-90% of college students will be doing the same thing when they graduate, which is finding a job! You get paid a fixed salary and have to drive through terrible traffic with 80-90% of other people. The worst part is that you don’t have much time to enjoy playing video games and other fun stuff…
Now, I am not saying that there is anything is wrong with that, but if you want to become wealthy and have the freedom to choose what to do daily, there are better options.
Instead of doing what everyone else is doing, you can use your knowledge of video games and learn how to make money doing it. I personally have done it myself and currently am supporting my family with this with plenty of free time to play video games or do whatever.
2014 was the first year I made a significant amount of income from video games through a video game blog. Needless to say, I quit my job, dropped out of college and pursued this full time. Fast forward to 2016, I just hit 6 figures a year by selling one of my gaming sites, helping a startup company build mobile game fan sites and also running my own entertainment blog for myself.
If a college dropout that used to live the SGF(Sleeping, Gaming, Fapping) lifestyle can make it to 6 figures, so can you. 🙂
Below are the Pillars of Wealth that I follow and I highly recommend you follow if you want to succeed.
This one wasn’t obvious to me until my mid 20s. As they say, you will probably earn the average of the sum of your 5 closest friends. If you hang out with a bunch of friends that go to a day job, then you are more likely to do the same. If you hang out with a business owners, you will likely to follow suit as well. We tend to get competitive among ourselves. If you friends starts doing something cool, you want to do the same as well. This is the nature of humans.
If you ever played any MMORPG, you will see all these high level gamers decked out in the best gear you would dream of having. If you actually care about the game, you would start becoming competitive and play a lot and get a high level character with insane gear to become the coolest kids in the block. Where can you actually see normal people give up their social lives, family and even wife/girlfriends to become powerful in a virtual world? Not too many places! But we can describe this situation in one word – Competition!
Apply this in real life. If you want to become a rock star guitarist, go to a popular guitarist that already has achieved that status. If you want to become a pro gamer, go to spots where you see all the hardcore players playing in whatever game you are playing and see how they do it. If you want to start a successful business, go talk to people that already run successful businesses and are living the life you want…
Most importantly, don’t go learn that from professors in college that have never started a successful business in their lives. The list goes on and on…
Oh boy, this one took me a while to learn. I used to blame my parents for my lack of success in my life. I would tell my friends that my parents are “strict” or “not giving me enough money to go to school”. I was quite the spoiled brat.
The truth is, I can work smart and focus on building my video game business instead of playing all day and goofing off. Nobody owes me anything, including my parents. I could have had worse parents. To be honest, I am now grateful that I have an awesome dad and mum. They raised both my sister and I unconditionally, despite all the hardships they faced. They did their best to their abilities.
The moment I stop blaming anyone else for my own failures was the time where I started growing fast and actually see improvements in my life. I highly recommend you do the same.
I used to whine and complain pretty much about everything. The weather, the bad co-worker, the “mean” teacher and what not. Complaining doesn’t solve the problem. Taking action to fix the issue by talking to the person that can resolve it and your problems will be gone.
For the past year, I came across Will Bowen’s complaint free world movement. The key was to successfully not complain for 21 days straight. Basically, any form of complaint such as the weather or gossiping were not allowed. You are given a purple bracelet that you wear on your wrist. If you catch yourself complaining, you switch the bracelet to the opposite wrist. Initially, it was hard for me. I switched often. However, after a few months, I got better.
Funny enough, 7 months later of doing this, my income went from about $4000/month to $9000/month without changing much of my business practices. I also sold one of my gaming sites for five figures. You wonder how is that possible? Well, the moment you stop complaining, you start attracting positive people into your life. People that used to complain around you will stop hanging out with you. It is a win win situation!
Creating small achievable that leads up to your big goal is really vital in making sure you keep moving forward in the right direction. For example:
Goal – I want to create a $3000/month passive income online with YouTube.
If you are just starting out and have no idea how to do it, then this can be a bit daunting. Start breaking it down a bit more.
Now you have a better idea on how to get to your goal. Everyday, you will be going over these steps to make sure you are following it. Avoid doing anything outside of these and you will be well on your way to achieving your goal.
This carries on the previous pillar. Initially, you will want take action in working towards your smaller goals. But eventually, once you have started getting to $1000/month, you will want to start re-investing into your business by outsourcing certain tasks that isn’t an action that generates income. Let’s use the previous example above.
In the YouTube Channel goal, the most important step to getting paid will be steps 4 and 5. Step 2, making videos and then promoting the videos will help you get there, but you are going to need tools to speed up the process. Outsource your intro videos if you suck at creativity. You can get them done cheaply on Fiverr.
You will want to invest in tools such as a decent camera, video/audio recorder to improve the quality of your videos and making your life easier. Increasing quality of the video(be it informational, funny or entertaining) will make promoting your videos a lot easier. You will then want to take massive action into promoting your videos to increase subscribers. More subscribers = more views = more $.
This one is huge! You need to have the confidence and belief that you are going to make it, no matter what you do. Throughout the journey of entrepreneurship, you will encounter many ups and downs. You will fail here and there. If you can’t get past any of the hurdles, you will give up. That’s why confidence and belief is so important. You want to be able to shrug off your failures, and get one step closer to success. Failed today? No problem! Let me dust myself off and try again!
